But it wasn't always this way.
No - I didn't truly perfect my current training methods until about 7 years ago.
See, I still remember the day I bench pressed the first time.
I was 14 years old.
It was glorious!! :)
The "pump" I got in my chest and arms is what got me hooked from the start.
So, I trained more or less like a bodybuilder for the next 15 years or so.
I'd focus on a couple of body parts each day. Chest and triceps usually on Mondays, back and back and biceps on Tuesdays, Wednesdays off, legs on Thursdays, shoulders and abs on Fridays.
Monday for example would almost always start with bench press. Then we'd proceed to blast that body part with three or four other moves over the next 30 or 40 minutes.
Rest, and come back back the next day and repeat with different body parts.
Thing was, that training style DOES get you big and strong.
By the time I was 21 years old, I In my senior year of college, I weighed almost 300 pounds. I bench pressed 450, power cleaned 365, and squatted 575.
BUT - that training also took a BIG toll on my body.
My joints ached. My body hurt in general. And really, it didn't do a lot as far as conditioning or carry-over to real world activities.
So when my football career ended, I no longer really needed to be as big and strong as possible.
And I started to explore other methods of "functional training"
I played around balancing on one leg ... hopped from one foot to another ... danced through stability ladders ... but none of it really stuck.
UNTIL, I discovered KBs in 2009.
I loved them so much (and still do), and trained with them almost exclusively until 2009.
It was the best training tool EVER.
Now, EVERY WORKOUT was total body. You'd get your heart rate up while at the SAME TIME, getting resistance training.
TOTALLY different than what I was used to ... but also, really awesome!
Thing was, then I lost a bit TOO much muscle for my liking.
The balance had swung the other way.
